Other than once every four years when we add a day, each year has 365 days, and each one is marked by certain events that occurred in the past. Some are whimsical, some evoke proud memories, and some change the world. This day, August 6th, ushered in the Atomic Age when a B-52 bomber dropped dropped the atomic bomb that destroyed the City of Hiroshima, Japan, killing well over 100,000 people instantly, with more than 100,000 others injured and subsequently perishing as a result.

The horrific event and the follow up bombing of Nagasaki three days later, led to the end of World War 2. The technology behind it spawned many of the innovations we take for granted today, but many would say… ‘At what cost?’
August 6th is also the day Jamaica gained independence from British rule back in 1962.

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act on August 6, 1965. I’m sure it was thought that the legislation would solve all our nation’s problems surrounding our elections. 60 years later… well you know…
Gertrude Ederle of New York became the first woman to swim the English Channel on this day in 1926.

Of course, every day brings with it many wonderful moments around the world, most of those we don’t hear about, but should. The optimist in me believes the good far outweighs the bad regardless of which part of the globe we could focus on. So, I hope you greet each day with a smile on your face, with a determination to do your part to create a better world.
